Are Foundations Covered under My Homeowners Insurance?

houseHave you ever wounded if foundations are covered as part of your homeowner's insurance? Foundation repair can be very expensive. At the same time, fixing a failing foundation isn't something that you could ignore. Foundation damage, like, settlement, cracks, and other damages, threaten the structural integrity of your entire home. This is exactly the reason why you can't postpone foundation repairs. Most of these issues are progressive, meaning that waiting results in more extensive repairs.

To figure out if your home insurance policy will cover your foundation, you first need to determine what caused the trouble you're having. In some cases, it will be obvious, like damage from a tornado or earthquake. Remember, each policy is different, and your claim will be settled based on your actual policy terms.

If your foundation is damaged from a covered loss, chances are your loss would be covered. Here are some common exclusions you should know about.

  1. Faulty workmanship
  2. Wear and tear
  3. Cracking not associated with a covered loss
  4. Sinkholes
  5. Earthquake
  6. Landslides
  7. Tree damage
